Analyst
Being a Sales, Trading and
Quantitative Analyst at Citi
Analysts are crucial to
our success. They provide the foundation for everything we do, from
client coverage, to idea generation, to executing trades.
An example of a typical day for a Sales, Trading and Quantitative
Analysis Analyst:
|
7:15-7:45am
|
Run the morning graph packs, which are updates
of the market sent out to our customers and internal contacts in
Citi. Each Analyst that has spent time on this desk has contributed
to the automation of this task, which has, as a result, been
reduced to a 20-minute process.
|
|
7:45-8:15am
|
Respond to customer requests in my e-mail
inbox that have come in since the previous night.
|
|
8:15-12:00pm
|
In the morning, I work on ongoing projects
while simultaneously responding to immediate customer needs
(Streamlining a customer report, running a historical/spot analysis
on Municipal ratios, preparing customized analysis on the Muni
market for the sales/trading force).
|
|
12:00pm
|
I try to go with a friend from my desk to grab
lunch and bring it back to the desk (since it's a trading floor, we
need to be accessible to each other and our clients); most of my
colleagues will put in for a delivery from a local restaurant.
|
|
12:15pm - 4:30pm
|
In the afternoon, I will continue with any
ongoing projects. During this time, we have also periodically
scheduled internal presentations for ongoing education in the
municipal market and its evolving products.
|
|
4:30pm
|
At the end of the day, I'll go over what
happened in the market with the sales and trading force and create
an end-of-day summary for our entire derivatives desk, including
the daily profit/loss summary.
|
|
6:00pm
|
I usually leave by 6pm unless there are
outstanding projects with pressing deadlines.

Initial Training
The
Sales, Trading and Quantitative Analysis program has two separate
tracks. The Sales and Trading track is designed to give students
interested in a career in Sales & Trading the opportunity to
spend time in these disciplines in both Fixed Income and Equities.
The Quantitative Trading & Analysis track allows students with
strong technical and quantitative abilities to spend time in Fixed
Income Strategy and in a Quantitative Trading function.
The ST&QA program commences in July with a three-week intensive
training program. Following this training, Analysts participate in
a placement process with product groups from their respective
tracks. The students hired into the Sales & Trading track will
meet with the various sales and trading desks in Fixed Income and
Equities. The students hired into the Quantitative Trading and
Analysis track will meet with the Fixed Income Strategy and
Analysis groups and the more quantitative trading desks in FICC and
Equities. It is during this stage that Analysts gain exposure to
the senior professionals who will serve as mentors throughout the
two-year process.

Summer Analyst
The Summer Analyst Program
starts in June with a one-week in-depth training program. During
the first day you’ll get an overview of Citi and our Capital
Markets division. After that you’ll jump into four days of
classroom training and learn these basic parts of the Summer
Analyst role before joining a desk.
After Training
In addition to formal
training, our interns have an opportunity to work alongside our
Full-time professionals in virtually every product area.
Our Program also allows the flexibility for Summer Analysts to
spend time in the product areas that they find most interesting:
Equities, Municipals or Fixed Income, Sales or Trading.
In addition to our classroom training program, we offer weekly
“Distinguished Speaker” events throughout the summer that give
interns a deeper understanding of the securities industry in
general and Sales & Trading in particular. Analysts will be
scheduled for lunch with the heads of the areas they have visited,
as well as with 1st and 2nd Year Analysts who can answer questions
about their rotations.
