Associate

Being a Sales and Trading Associate at Citi
An S&T Associate serves as a member of the Sales or Trading desk Team. Each desk has multiple products, deadlines and deliverables that must be managed. An Associate may work with the client, sales force, syndicate desks or research departments on a daily basis.
Initial Training
Training begins with a one-week overview of the full range of Citi products and services. Next, Associates spend eight weeks in the classroom learning about Sales & Trading, with particular emphasis on:

  • Bond Math
  • Accounting
  • Derivatives
  • Equity Analytics
  • Fixed Income & Equities Products

What You Can Expect To Learn as an Associate
The Sales, Trading and Quantitative Associate Two-Year Associate Program is unlike any other on Wall Street. This highly competitive and selective program gives recent graduates interested in a career in the markets a comprehensive introduction to our Fixed Income, Currency, Commodity and Equity franchises. Working alongside our experienced professionals, incoming Associates will have the opportunity to actively participate in the research, trading and marketing of securities to our institutional client base.
The Sales and Trading track is designed to give students interested in a career in Sales & Trading the opportunity to spend time in these disciplines in both Fixed Income and Equities. Placement occurs when each Associate is matched with an appropriate job. Our goal is to ensure that every Associate is placed in a job that best pairs their skill sets and personal interests with the needs of the firm. Associates will be required to pass the appropriate licensing examinations including the Series 7, 63, 55 and 3. Once these obligations are fulfilled, Associates will work on their assigned desks performing a variety of functions, adding more value as they develop.
For the second year of the Program, Associates are given the opportunity to work in a new area, thus developing a broader knowledge base and network within the firm. We want our Associates to be fully educated on all aspects of the markets. Therefore, if an Associate spent his or her first year in Sales, via the Sales & Trading track, he or she may switch to the Trading side of the business, in either Fixed Income or Equities.
Who We’re Looking For
The Associate program is for people with their MBA. We aren’t really looking for people who fit into a specific Sales and Trading mold. Our professionals come from diverse backgrounds, and as a company we emphasize individuality. These qualities are reflected in the diverse talents and backgrounds of our Associates.

Summer Associate Program
All Summer Associates participate in a 3-day training program during the first week of the Summer Program. The comprehensive training program is taught by skilled external consultants along with selected professionals with industry and product expertise. The program is designed to cover the fundamental aspects of the Sales, Trading and Quantitative Summer Associate role.
After Training
Summer Associates in Sales & Trading will participate in a structured rotation designed to introduce them to the fundamentals of the business. Interns will participate in rotations across the Equities, Fixed Income and Municipals businesses. Working alongside our experienced professionals, interns will have the opportunity to actively participate in the research, trading and marketing of securities to our institutional client base.
In addition to our 3-day training program, we offer weekly "Distinguished Speaker" events throughout the summer that give interns a deeper understanding of the securities industry in general and Sales & Trading in particular. Summer Associates will be scheduled for lunch with the heads of the areas they have visited, as well as with 1st and 2nd Year Associates who can answer questions about their rotations.
